PAPER

My botanical sculptures are made from kozo, abaca, gampi and cotton fiber with added plant material. I fabricate twig skeletons and twisted vine forms and temporarily attach fabric to the outside. This holds the wet pulp medium that is poured inside until it dries on the form.

What I like about making paper is that it offers the opportunity to be close to nature. I grow common and unusual garden plants, watching with interest as the palettes for my botanical sculptures develop. Using the plant material in my work extends the life of my garden and the enjoyment it gives.

My approach to making paper is the same as with other art I create. I envision the result and imagine the process, but let the materials ultimately guide the direction. The papermaking process has many demanding steps that require effort but it pays off ~ I get to witness a wet sloppy mess become an elegant object.
